…the cute elderly couple…
He walks in with her allowing her to balance herself arm wrapped around his with their elbows locked together for stability. He can walk faster though their age is notably equal.  She walks at a slow pace nearly shaky yet strong using carefully measured steps. She utilizes his strength while counterbalancing on a three pronged cane.
They select their table. He makes sure she safely sits down. Then he walks to the counter to order their coffee. He brings both cups to the table handing hers to her then sits down. They quietly but conversationally sit for a while sipping and chatting with each other.
Typically I have observed her wearing some sort of a hat. He seldom does. Often they order some sort of a snack cake. Sometimes their stay is short and other times it a longer while. This though is typical of coffee shop regulars. Sometimes they will smile at a matching action from others. Sometimes an occasion arises where a family member or someone else joins them; mostly family I think.
When they finish their coffee time together it ends as it started, only in reverse. He gets up first and tosses their trash. Then as she begins to get up to put on a jacket or sweater as it does or doesn’t apply based on whether she braces herself with her three legged cane. He walks up and positions himself close to her. She threads her forearm around and through his elbow.  In this way he steadies her as they slowly step by step make their way back to the car.
At the car she hesitates at the door while he opens it for her. He stands there until he safely assists her by maneuvering her around the door to be seated. He then walks to the other side, seats himself and they drive away from the coffee shop.
I have observed this routine of theirs each and every time I have seen them there.  When I first saw them it looked so cute and I eventually realized it was a regular trip for them.
Do you ever ask yourself, how would I handle myself in those circumstances?  Would you be patient, caring, enjoying the time together? Would you be impatient with such folks? Are you? Or do you instead delight in the fact that they go to such an effort and trouble to get out and enjoy life, as simple as this sort of activity is?  They made their decision though to make the effort to be able to enjoy the simple things…..at the coffee shop.

“Biscuits Are Done”
This painting was based on hand made biscuits my mama cooked one day.
I took a photo and painted them. Yes they were as good as they looked and we as a family enjoyed them.
