WAYNE LUCINA

Artist Statement
My work draws from countless influences that are conscious and in many ways subliminal. With every new painting or drawing these influences manifest themselves with a personality all their own. I don't attempt to adhere to one style or another because the artwork itself will take me down that road. I will often begin a painting with a loose map of an idea, only to be detoured to a different destination. I like using bright, vibrant colors and avoid using mass tones when possible, preferring to mix and tube my custom mixes. When someone views my work, I want them to retain a latent image that sticks with them. I want them to have an emotional as well as a visual experience.
Biography
Contemporary artist Wayne A. Lucina began his obsession with art many years ago as a phantom street artist around the Red Bank and Eatontown, NJ area.  Many street signs, building walls, alleys, etc. were adorned with spray and stencil art, as well as stickers carrying the moniker “Fuely Hedz”.  At approximately the same time he was designing and printing album and promotional art for local hard rock bands such as Starkweather and BOLTACTIONBELIEF.  Close working relationships with these bands lead to several music video directing opportunities and eventually, writing, directing and filming an independent short film.  In the mid 2000’s he created the Dead Air Graphic Artwear t-shirt line that includes the iconic “Skateboarding Alien” and the “Hang Loose” orange sunrise images.

Mr. Lucina’s work seems to not fit neatly into any genre, perhaps due his myriad of influences and unique penchant for combining images and references that on the surface may not be relevant to one another.  A deeper consideration of his pieces, however, often reveal unexpected and sometimes satirical associations.  His varied style has been described as “pop progressive”, “abstract conceptualism” and even “cartoon noir”.  He works in acrylics, oils, spray paints, markers, enamels and mixed media on canvas, wood panels and 3D surfaces.  He has exhibited in galleries and shows in New Egypt NJ, Freehold NJ, Bound Brook NJ, Trenton NJ, Atlantic Highlands NJ, Asbury Park NJ, Smithville NJ, Phoenixville PA, Philadelphia PA, New York City (East Village, Broadway) NY, and Wilmington DE.  He received considerable media attention for his featured work in the Evil Clown Show at the A. J. Dillon Gallery (revealing an affinity for clowns which continue to show up in his pieces).

Having completed over 100 original works, Mr. Lucina has become sought after by several collectors.  He produces affordable prints of many of his pieces, because he firmly believes art should be accessible to everyone.  Mr. Lucina’s studio is currently located in New Egypt, NJ.
